Take your WebDAV folder with you!

Create your WebDAV folders for WebCT courses as usual (http://www.wcu.edu/it/edtech/handouts/webct/ManagingWebCTFileswithWebDAV.pdf).

Then drag the shortcut from your "Network Places" folder onto your jump drive. Presto ... you can take it with you!

Presumably, this would work with any removable media (zip drive, etc.), but I've only tested it with jump/flash drives.

Thanks to Jane Sullivan for this tip.

Why can’t my students take quizzes, view discussion postings, or download files in WebCT?

Has a student reported to you that they cannot take quizzes, view discussion posting, or download course materials?

To view solutions to these problems, click here.

Another possible problem is that downloads are being blocked. This problem is addressed in the blog posting entitled "Why can't my students access course materials."

If you want help, send Nina Marable an email.

Images in Respondus ... adding and deleting

Creative (higher level) questions can be constructed in Respondus by putting images in the question or the answers.

You can view a helplet and a sample question.

The helplet also describes how to remove images.

Assignments/Dropbox Tool Helplet

If you want students to submit assignments digitially, "best practice" would be to use the Assignments/Dropbox tool.

You can view a helplet.

Please note that the default icon for this tool is a file/in tray. If you have something on your course (that was there when the course was new) called Assignments, but the icon is a backpack, beware. This tool is probably a Content Module, a good tool but different from THE Assignments tool.

If you want help, send Nina Marable an email.

For faculty instructions on how to set up an account and upload student files, click here.

You may also choose to allow your students to upload files. For instructions to give to your students, click here.

If you want workshop instruction on using Turnitin, email Nina Marable.

Best Practice for Student File Submission in WebCT

Use the assignment/dropbox tool.

Frequently, we answer calls from frantic students who have lost files while typing in a WebCT discussion session.
  • Because of the nature of a WebCT session, typing LONG entries in a discussion posting can very easily lead a timeout.
  • WebCT only registers link and button clicks to show that a user is active. “Non-active” (just typing text) users are timed out after 180 minutes.
  • Therefore, if a user types in a textbox for longer than 180 minutes and then clicks the submit button, they will be told they have timed out and their message will be lost. We cannot recover these lost messages.
Best Practice: Don’t ask students to submit long documents by attachment to the discussion board or email. If you really want them to do it this way, tell them to compose in a word processing program, saving frequently, and then to cut and paste to the discussion or email attachment.

Update your WebCT site

funky cat Posted by Hello

If you have this icon on your WebCT site:

* please check the link
* The link should take students to https://online2.wcu.edu, https://online2.wcu.edu/student_faq.html OR https://online2.wcu.edu/student_tutorials.html.
* In many courses, the link is to an older (and out-of-date) eTech site.
